James Edwin Forbes was born in 1876.

He was in partnership with John Duncan Tate from 1905-1930, when their work appeared regularly in the architectural press. The firm is best known for 'Pollards Park House', Chalfont St. Giles, 1907, and 'Pednor House', Chesham, 1911.

At Gerrards Cross, they designed several houses in Oval Way for Harold Raffety, including 'The Pollards', 'Brown Cottage', and 'Kimberley. They also designed 'The Paddock House' and 'Widenham House' on West Common.
